The Colors of Easter – A Countdown for Kids

Recently I was thinking about how I have all these fun traditions leading up to Christmas, but nothing really special for the kids leading up to Easter. So I decided to start an Easter countdown as a fun way to look forward to celebrating as well as remember why we celebrate.

I’m hoping this is something special we can do every year for a long time, adapting as the girls grow. This year our theme is “The Colors of Easter”, designed to walk through six colors, each one a symbolic part of the Resurrection account.

If you’re looking for a special and Biblical way to count down to Easter with your family, I’d love to have you join us! At the end of this post you’ll find a PDF called The Colors of Easter which includes information about the purpose of this countdown, a supply list, and daily guides for parents. I’m using what I call the “RAMP it up” method to help kids dig deeper in the Word. You can read more about it on my Resources page.

Here’s a quick peek at what to expect… our countdown begins Monday and runs through Saturday in the form of a half dozen filled Easter eggs. Inside each egg is the color theme for the day and a Bible reading to go with the theme. In our house the egg will be hidden each day as an added level of fun!

Along with a Bible reading there are questions and discussion points to help make age-appropriate applications for young kids. Every day ends with a prayer focus, to encourage the habit of prayer in association with Bible reading. We also have a special craft to build on daily, creating a “Road to Easter” scene full of symbolic colors that will be completed right in time for Resurrection Sunday. I’ve included a PDF entitled The Road to Easter below which is a pre-made version to work off of, or you can create your own with your child(ren). Here’s an example of what it might look like when it’s all done…

I can’t wait to start this with Natalie on Monday! If you have young kids at home we’d really love to have you join us. Please feel free to share as well. I truly hope that other families can enjoy this together as we count down to the celebrating the incredible gift of Jesus’ death and resurrection.
